Why Choose Handmade Jewellery? How to Support Small Businesses
26 October, 2021

Many large brands source their jewellery from countries like Cambodia and Vietnam, often using low-quality materials and mass-producing over 10,000 identical pieces. The prices are low, and the costs of production are minimal, but these brands are notorious for using child labour and generating tons of waste. Let me introduce you to the charm of handmade jewellery and why supporting small businesses is important.

1.    Unique Designs
Handmade jewellery stands out due to the individual attention and care that goes into each piece. Unlike mass-produced jewellery, which often follows trends and replicates popular styles, handmade pieces allow you to express your individuality with something truly unique.

2.    Artisan Craftsmanship
Each handmade piece is a testament to the skill and creativity of the artisan. From intricate wirework to delicate beadwork, handmade jewellery showcases the artistry and craftsmanship involved in every detail, creating pieces that are as beautiful as they are meaningful.

3.    Quality Materials
Artisans often prioritize high-quality materials, carefully selecting semi-precious stones, metals, and other components. This focus on quality ensures that handmade jewellery not only looks stunning but also stands the test of time, becoming cherished heirlooms passed down through generations.

4.    Support for Small Businesses
By choosing handmade jewellery, you support independent artisans and small businesses rather than large corporations. This direct support enables artisans to continue perfecting their craft, pursue their passion, and contribute to their local communities.

5.    Customization
Handmade jewellery often offers the opportunity for customization, allowing you to create a piece that perfectly reflects your style, preferences, and personality. Whether it's incorporating a meaningful gemstone or adjusting the size and length of a necklace, handmade jewellery can be tailored to your individual taste.

In contrast to mass-produced pieces driven by fast fashion and low-cost production, small businesses focus on unique designs, artisan craftsmanship, and high-quality materials, with opportunities for personalization. Choosing handmade jewellery means adorning yourself with something not only beautiful but also filled with meaning and care.

I can only speak for my own creations, as I've been crafting jewellery for nearly 10 years. At Elia, I use semi-precious stones, stainless steel, and occasionally brass without zinc or nickel. Many of the fasteners are silicone, making them entirely hypoallergenic. Crystals and pearls are sourced from small brands, and the semi-precious stones come with certification. The resin I use is from the Italian brand iCrystal, and I use various types of resin for different pieces. Each pair of earrings takes 8-10 hours to make, not including drying time, so the total production time for a piece is between 3-5 days.

How to Support Small Businesses and Handmade Products:

  • Shop locally: Whenever possible, choose to shop from local businesses rather than large chains or online retailers.
  • Spread the word: Use your platform and social media presence to promote small businesses you love. Share positive reviews, photos of your purchases, and recommendations with friends, family, and followers to help raise awareness and attract new customers.
  • Attend events and markets: Support small businesses by attending local craft fairs and community events where artisans and entrepreneurs showcase their products and services.
  • Buy gifts from small businesses: Consider purchasing gifts from small businesses to use later or give to friends and family.
  • Leave positive reviews: Take the time to leave positive reviews and recommendations for small businesses on platforms and social media. This feedback helps boost visibility, credibility, and customer trust.
  • Offer feedback and suggestions: Small businesses value feedback from their customers. Whether it’s sharing your experience, offering suggestions for improvement, or requesting specific products or services, constructive feedback helps them better meet the needs and preferences of their clientele.

Supporting handmade jewellery and small businesses not only elevates your personal style but also contributes to a more ethical and sustainable fashion industry.
